I just re-discovered some photos Eric took on the Atlantic Avenue Tunnel Tour last year. If you live in New York and have not done this, I suggest you do. The next tour is on March 7th, and it is $15. DO IT. You even get to climb down a manhole in the middle of a busy intersection!

a few questions answered…

gooneruk asked:

Do you find yourself making notes to yourself whenever you have an idea for a 365 photo, or is it pretty much spontaneous each day with camera in hand?

Hi, Rob! At the beginning of the year, I made a big long list of concepts I wanted to try for 365 photos, and I’ve been adding to it ever since. But more often than not, I come up with an idea during the day and when I go home at night I try to make it happen. It always morphs into something slightly different than what I had planned. And then there are other days when I can’t be bothered to come up with something interesting so I just do my best to take a semi-decent shot. I’m more than open to suggestions if you have any!

therealdgr asked:

What makes you happy?

Well well well. Lots of things. Adventure makes me happy. Feeling like what I’m doing could go in one of a hundred different directions. The unknown. The dangerous. The exciting. And traveling makes me happy. I feel the most challenged, interested, engaged, open-minded and fulfilled when I am on the road. Being by myself makes me happy. Recharging, reflecting. Taking photos makes me happy. Being creative and being proud of my work. Those are just a few.

lionversusbear asked:

What’s your favourite Disney movie?

First of all, great spelling of “favourite.” Second of all, The Little Mermaid, probably. But I’m not all that into Disney movies, to be honest.

zelnox asked:

Did you make a snowman this year yet? Now’s the time!

Snowman! Umm, no. New York isn’t the best place for snowman-building. Where would I make one? On the street corner? I suppose I could have tried, but I suspect it would have survived less than 2 minutes before a cab in a rush ran over it. And that would be devastating as I watched the hit-and-run from my bedroom window, 4 floors above.

thatshitisbananas asked:

I seriously don’t know what to do for my birthday tomorrow! Suggestions, please..?

Happy Birthday!! Lots of ice cream cake. A long bike ride. An afternoon nap. Dinner at your favorite restaurant. And then call me and I’ll sing you happy birthday.

buildingaladder asked:

Where was your favorite photo excursion or favorite subject? Is it difficult to get access to all the abandoned places you shoot?

I have to say, my shoot with Kevin last weekend was one of my favorites. But I’d have to go with my abandoned hospital shoots at Hudson and Norwich. There’s really no way to describe what it is like inside, or how it feels to be there. It’s slightly difficult and involves breaking in. But that’s all a part of the fun. :)

bewuethr asked:

When are you going to make another video like the cool “my way to work” one from some time ago?

Oooh! Yes, yes. I’ve been meaning to get back into video. And I plan to very soon. I have a few ideas. Stand by…

paulallison asked:

If a teacher in Nebraska wanted to show students what NYC looks like, what would you recommend?

As in, coming to visit, or showing them photos? A very different answer for each.

scottmacwatters asked:

How’d you get into photography?
also, what program do you use to edit, and what do you typically shoot with?

Hello, Scott. About a year and a half ago I picked up a friend’s DSLR at a bar and was hooked. I bought my own the next week and started shooting, every day, every weekend. I just fell in love. It became everything to me, and progressed quickly. I started shooting with friends (Melissa, Erin, Matt, Ian) and talking photography with others (Eric, Ben, Gina) and was endlessly encouraged to keep at it. So, here we are.

I edit in Lightroom and Photoshop, a mixture of both. And I shoot mostly with my Canon 5D MarkII, with a 24-70mm lens.

I am a volunteer photographer for New York Cares. Every couple months I get to document one of their fantastic events.
I spent last Saturday at Harlem’s PS 375 with Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. He put on a concert for the school’s children who have had perfect attendance so far this year. It was tons of fun, and I even got to dance a jig to Puff the Magic Dragon!
Peter is an advocate for education programs, focusing on the importance of treating others with kindness. He is the founder and president of Operation Respect. Good times all around.
